Todd Miller:

I'm Todd Miller of Isaiah Industries, manufacturer of

Todd Miller:

specialty residential metal roofing and other building materials.

Todd Miller:

Welcome to Construction Disruption, the show that explores what's new,

Todd Miller:

what's next, and what's working in the construction and remodeling worlds.

Todd Miller:

Um, I'm really excited about going forward with today's show today.

Todd Miller:

But first, let me welcome our co-host, Ryan Bell.

Todd Miller:

Ryan, how you doing?

Ryan Bell:

I'm doing well, Todd, how are you?

Todd Miller:

I'm doing well.

Todd Miller:

Also heard something interesting the other day.

Ryan Bell:

Please share.

Todd Miller:

Yeah, I heard that you can actually skydive, uh, without a parachute.

Ryan Bell:

Really

Todd Miller:

Um, problem is you can't skydive twice without a parachute.

Todd Miller:

Okay, sorry about that.

Ryan Bell:

nice there.

Ryan Bell:

There is actually, uh, I believe Travis Pastrana jumped out of

Ryan Bell:

a airplane without a parachute.

Todd Miller:

I have seen some of that.

Todd Miller:

Yeah.

Todd Miller:

And then, and then the gliding stuff too, where they look like flying

Todd Miller:

squirrels until they land someplace.

Ryan Bell:

Yep.

Todd Miller:

I, I'm gonna, I'm gonna pass.

Todd Miller:

I mean, I've been roofing all my life and I still don't like kites particularly,

Todd Miller:

so passing Anyway, shall we move ahead?

Ryan Bell:

Yes, let's get started.

Todd Miller:

Fantastic.

Todd Miller:

Well, one of the things I often, um, have talked to roofing contractors about

Todd Miller:

over the years is how possibly they could differentiate themselves by taking more of

Todd Miller:

a design build approach to roofing, uh, as they talk to their clients rather than a.

Todd Miller:

I'm a roofer.

Todd Miller:

Here's my price type of approach that so many contractors like to take.

Todd Miller:

Um, so today we're going to dig into that with a company that is

Todd Miller:

indeed taking a different approach to the benefit of their clients.

Todd Miller:

Our featured guest today is Ashley Moss, owner and president of Missus,

Todd Miller:

that's MRS, missus Roof Pros based in Greenville, South Carolina.

Todd Miller:

With a passion for craftsmanship and a fresh eye for curb appeal.

Todd Miller:

Ashley started MRS Roof Pros in 2025 out of her love for the roofing

Todd Miller:

industry and her desire to bring a female perspective to the industry.

Todd Miller:

MRS Roof Pros believes that a roof is an opportunity to reimagine, um, and re-image

Todd Miller:

a home's design, elevate its value.

Todd Miller:

And at the same time, protect what matters most.

Todd Miller:

All with style and precision.

Todd Miller:

Ashley, welcome to Construction Disruption.

Ashley Moss:

Thank you.

Ashley Moss:

I'm so happy to be here.

Ashley Moss:

Todd and Ryan, thank you for having me.

Todd Miller:

Well, we are thrilled to have you here and I forgot to tell our

Todd Miller:

audience we are doing challenge words again this episode, so y'all can be

Todd Miller:

listening for something we may say that is a little bit peculiar and figure out

Todd Miller:

if that might be our challenge word.

Todd Miller:

So, um, let's move ahead.

Todd Miller:

Tell us a little bit, Ashley, how did you fall in love with roofing

Todd Miller:

as a profession and as a business?

Ashley Moss:

Well, I think like most people, you don't really fall in love with

Ashley Moss:

roofing as much as you fall into roofing.

Ashley Moss:

Right?

Ashley Moss:

That's pretty much what happened to me.

Ashley Moss:

It's almost like both of them happened to me.

Ashley Moss:

So by that, let me tell you the little story.

Ashley Moss:

So about 11, 12 years ago, I was, um.

Ashley Moss:

I was, I was looking for something new to do.

Ashley Moss:

I hadn't had been in the workforce for a while, and one of my good

Ashley Moss:

friends who, our sons played football together, she was working at a roofing,

Ashley Moss:

distribute a distribution center.

Ashley Moss:

And she said, Hey, we're looking for a part-time file clerk.

Ashley Moss:

Is that something you'd be interested in?

Ashley Moss:

And I said, sure.

Ashley Moss:

I mean, I'm raising four kids.

Ashley Moss:

I'm always looking for another way to bring in some sort of income.

Ashley Moss:

And so I said, sure, I'll, I'll do that.

Ashley Moss:

And so what started out was just as a part-time file clerk in

Ashley Moss:

the HR department turned into.

Ashley Moss:

A full-time HR assistant position.

Ashley Moss:

And then I kind of just as opportunities presented themselves, I just kind

Ashley Moss:

of moved into some different roles.

Ashley Moss:

And it was actually really great because the distribution company was in its

Ashley Moss:

beginning phases, it was growing, so that really lent to some opportunities for me,

Ashley Moss:

and I ironically ended up in a position.

Ashley Moss:

Um, as their organizational development specialist, which is what I had

Ashley Moss:

gotten my degree in, but had never used right, like so many of us.

Ashley Moss:

And so with that position, I was able to start creating content

Ashley Moss:

training programs for their.

Ashley Moss:

Up and coming new managers, their current branch managers, district

Ashley Moss:

managers, all those kind of of positions.

Ashley Moss:

And so I was creating content training programs and that let me learn more

Ashley Moss:

and more about the roofing industry.

Ashley Moss:

I got to see.

Ashley Moss:

Um, what a distributor saw.

Ashley Moss:

I got to meet vendors and manufacturers because of course they're always

Ashley Moss:

looking for ways to get people to pay for those trading programs.

Ashley Moss:

So I was able to meet a lot of really interesting individuals and

Ashley Moss:

some great people in the industry.

Ashley Moss:

And I learned more about the products both on the residential

Ashley Moss:

and the commercial side.

Ashley Moss:

And so that really lent.

Ashley Moss:

That, that opening and that that learn uh, that introduction to the roofing industry.

Ashley Moss:

And then not only did I start to fall in love with that industry as I think

Ashley Moss:

most of us do once we get in it, 'cause you find some really cool people.

Ashley Moss:

Um, but I also was able to find my husband and so that's how I also fell in love with

Ashley Moss:

roofing as I got to fall in love with him.

Ashley Moss:

And he is been in the roofing industry for years, so it's kind of a win-win for me.

Todd Miller:

That is awesome.

Todd Miller:

I have to think, you know, as you went from distribution and transitioned from

Todd Miller:

that into, um, actual contracting, I have to think that somehow, you know,

Todd Miller:

you looked at the roofing industry and you saw an opportunity probably to

Todd Miller:

better meet homeowner and customer needs.

Todd Miller:

Um, can you tell us a little bit about what that opportunity

Todd Miller:

was you saw out there?

Ashley Moss:

Yeah, we, I, I, I saw an opportunity to create.

Ashley Moss:

Kind of a different approach, like we talked about that

Ashley Moss:

re-imagining the roofing process.

Ashley Moss:

Right?

Ashley Moss:

I saw that there was a lack of, I think oftentimes education for the homeowner.

Ashley Moss:

They don't know what they don't know, and there's so much more out there now,

Ashley Moss:

as you know, as a, as a manufacturer, as a vendor, there's so many more options

Ashley Moss:

out there available to the homeowner.

Ashley Moss:

And putting a roof on a house is a very big costly investment into your home.

Ashley Moss:

And so we saw that.

Ashley Moss:

Why not add a little bit more style?

Ashley Moss:

Let's add, let's take those options that the manufacturers are creating and let's

Ashley Moss:

really put that into the sales process and give our our clients the opportunity to.

Ashley Moss:

Put their own stamp on their home, create a little more style with it, right?

Ashley Moss:

And so that's kind of the focus that we went with.

Ashley Moss:

And we were like, let's add more style, let's add more color, let's add

Ashley Moss:

more, you know, pizazz fun into it.

Ashley Moss:

And that that also lent itself to a, a slowing down the sales process too.

Ashley Moss:

We really want to.

Ashley Moss:

Make our customer our partner, you know, this is a big purchase,

Ashley Moss:

this is a big investment.

Ashley Moss:

You've really gotta trust that person that's coming into your home.

Ashley Moss:

And so that's, that's the way we saw it.

Ashley Moss:

We're like, let's, let's create a whole different process for a homeowner and,

Ashley Moss:

and change kind of what the typical roofing or roofer contractor looks like.

Todd Miller:

I love that, and it goes right along with

Todd Miller:

something we say all the time.

Todd Miller:

I mean, you know, when you look at most homes, exteriors, about

Todd Miller:

two thirds of what you see is.

Todd Miller:

Roof in a lot of cases.

Todd Miller:

And, you know, we would never use the same trim or siding or brick

Todd Miller:

colors, all of our neighbors.

Todd Miller:

Um, but we always so often use the same roofing.

Todd Miller:

So I love what you're doing in terms of pointing that out and

Todd Miller:

kind of opening up people's worlds.

Todd Miller:

Well, I, I know that as you mentioned, Josh, um, is in the

Todd Miller:

business with your husband.

Todd Miller:

Um, he is your vice president of operations.

Todd Miller:

I'm kind of curious, so, so you're focused a lot on that.

Todd Miller:

Customer experience side of things.

Todd Miller:

Um, what do Josh's experience and passion bring to your clients?

Ashley Moss:

Well, I think for the most part, Josh.

Ashley Moss:

Brings a lot of the fun.

Ashley Moss:

He is a, he is an extremely energized, uh, positive individual,

Ashley Moss:

so I really like that, that he brings a lot of the fun into it.

Ashley Moss:

He's very passionate about roofing.

Ashley Moss:

He has been in the business for almost 30 years, and he has, he's

Ashley Moss:

pretty much been on every angle of it.

Ashley Moss:

He's been a contractor before.

Ashley Moss:

He's been in the distribution side.

Ashley Moss:

He's led.

Ashley Moss:

Sales team, so he really can bring knowledge and expertise to

Ashley Moss:

a homeowner on, on every angle.

Ashley Moss:

You know, what, what do they need?

Ashley Moss:

What do they want?

Ashley Moss:

What can we offer?

Ashley Moss:

And so that's what's really fun is that he brings the expertise, the knowledge.

Ashley Moss:

I rely heavily on him for that.

Ashley Moss:

Clearly his ability to get on a roof is great.

Ashley Moss:

That really helps me out.

Ashley Moss:

Um, but it, it is his ex, his expertise and his knowledge, and

Ashley Moss:

he's such a great support to me.

Ashley Moss:

He builds me up.

Ashley Moss:

I just, I, I, there's no one else I would rather do this

Ashley Moss:

with than him, so he's great.

Todd Miller:

cool.

Todd Miller:

Well, it sounds like you're a perfect match pair in a lot of respects then.

Todd Miller:

Well, so I'm kind of curious, so we are recording this shortly after, uh, one big

Todd Miller:

thing in the news of home improvement was.

Todd Miller:

Uh, Renovo Partners, uh, which was owned by venture capital just unexpectedly

Todd Miller:

closed up about three or four weeks ago.

Todd Miller:

Um, I'm, I'm kind of curious, and maybe it has nothing to do with that, but

Todd Miller:

is there anything when you look at the roofing business right now that kind

Todd Miller:

of troubles you, I mean advancements or things that are going on out

Todd Miller:

there that you feel may not be in the best interest of the property owner?

Ashley Moss:

I think pretty much what you just said, you know that that latest.

Ashley Moss:

The, the private equity coming in, right?

Ashley Moss:

The changes in that thing, I think the biggest concern that

Ashley Moss:

we have for our customers is you see that push for volume, right?

Ashley Moss:

They just wanna get in, they wanna get a roof sold.

Ashley Moss:

There's no care or concern about what the homeowner wants.

Ashley Moss:

Um, they just look at what they need and, and oftentimes I think there's,

Ashley Moss:

you know, like in any industry though, there's always a typical.

Ashley Moss:

The bad seed, the one that doesn't do what they're gonna

Ashley Moss:

say they're, they're gonna do.

Ashley Moss:

And, and we have personally had customers who said, okay, you're

Ashley Moss:

the third roofer I've called.

Ashley Moss:

Right?

Ashley Moss:

Other roofers have told me I need a whole new roof.

Ashley Moss:

I don't know if I believe 'em.

Ashley Moss:

Is that right?

Ashley Moss:

And so that gives us an opportunity to, to show them, okay, yes, they

Ashley Moss:

were right, or no, they weren't.

Ashley Moss:

Right.

Ashley Moss:

Right.

Ashley Moss:

So we're trying to change the reputation, trying to bring that

Ashley Moss:

trustworthiness, that honesty.

Ashley Moss:

Mostly the transparency back into the, into the roofing field.

Ashley Moss:

And so I think that's also why, because you do, you see this big push now for,

Ashley Moss:

um, for, for volume, let's just get a

Ashley Moss:

roof.

Ashley Moss:

Let's just fla the same thing up.

Ashley Moss:

Let's keep going.

Ashley Moss:

And I'm like, I'm like, all righty, then let's totally take it down.

Ashley Moss:

Let's slow it down a little bit.

Ashley Moss:

Let's change the process.

Ashley Moss:

And that's also, once again, wanting to reimagine that roofing

Ashley Moss:

experience for our homeowners.

Ashley Moss:

So.

Todd Miller:

Yeah, that's cool.

Todd Miller:

And you know, I think that I'm not gonna bash private equity too much, but I, I do

Todd Miller:

think when they get involved, everything.

Todd Miller:

Boils down to numbers for them.

Todd Miller:

Um, and, and that's not just their sales and their profits, but you

Todd Miller:

know, it's like you're saying, we just wanna go out there and sell as

Todd Miller:

many rifs as, as we possibly can.

Todd Miller:

And, uh, I think that's tough.

Todd Miller:

I know that, um, Scott Clifton, who is one of our territory managers,

Todd Miller:

uh, I know you work with Sam Knight in your area, but, uh, Scott is our

Todd Miller:

territory manager for the New England States and, uh, he has recently.

Todd Miller:

Crafted some talking points that he's sharing with contractors

Todd Miller:

about how to differentiate yourself from those companies that may be

Todd Miller:

driven, may be driven or owned by that, uh, private equity group.

Todd Miller:

And, um, really it's been re well received by a lot of contractors to see

Todd Miller:

the, the talking points he's sharing.

Todd Miller:

I'm kind of curious, as you look at, um, MRS Roof Bros, what are

Todd Miller:

your dreams for your company?

Todd Miller:

I think I maybe even saw where, you know, you wanna get more into other

Todd Miller:

types of home improvements as well.

Todd Miller:

Uh, tell us a little bit about that.

Ashley Moss:

Yes.

Ashley Moss:

We've got, we're really excited about what and where we wanna take MRS Roof pros.

Ashley Moss:

And we're actually already starting that.

Ashley Moss:

I mean, you're, you're, you're, you're spot on.

Ashley Moss:

We've actually started to create a, a whole new series that we're

Ashley Moss:

doing called Making it Home.

Ashley Moss:

Where we're gonna do a lot of social media and draw in more of the exterior design.

Ashley Moss:

'cause we have a full-time interior designer on staff and originally

Ashley Moss:

we kind of just had him, Hey, place your eyes on our customer's roof.

Ashley Moss:

Give us a couple of color choices or a different material choice so

Ashley Moss:

that way you as a homeowner get a professional kind of a viewpoint, which.

Ashley Moss:

Is also why that helps differentiate who we are as, as you know, MRS

Ashley Moss:

Roof Pros.

Ashley Moss:

But we also, um, want to continue that.

Ashley Moss:

We wanna take it from the roof to the rooms.

Ashley Moss:

We want to be your one stop shop, right?

Ashley Moss:

Because.

Ashley Moss:

Our biggest goal when we're meeting with a customer is to gain their trust, right?

Ashley Moss:

We wanna partner with our customers, and so if we can partner with 'em

Ashley Moss:

and we can gain that trust with 'em, then we've got our foot in the door.

Ashley Moss:

And as I'm sure you guys probably know yourself, like with a lot of contractors,

Ashley Moss:

when you're in there and you're spending time with that homeowner and you're

Ashley Moss:

listening to what their concerns are.

Ashley Moss:

We've had people talk about all sorts of things.

Ashley Moss:

They're like, okay, I've got a leaky window and I don't know about this

Ashley Moss:

siding, and why is my stove not working?

Ashley Moss:

And all sorts of weird questions.

Ashley Moss:

But that also gives us another opportunity to say, Hey, you know.

Ashley Moss:

Let's look at other things that we can help you with, or let's talk about your

Ashley Moss:

other needs you might have and, and we are partnering with a lot of very

Ashley Moss:

reputable contractors here that we can help with painting with, with siding,

Ashley Moss:

with gutters, with remodeling, right.

Ashley Moss:

And that's also wanting to pull that interior designer in to continue

Ashley Moss:

that so we can kind of touch.

Ashley Moss:

Everything that a homeowner might need, and when we can be their go-to person

Ashley Moss:

where they feel like they have that, that confidence and that trust already built.

Ashley Moss:

So yeah, and then also we would really love to see, let's

Ashley Moss:

take this brand of and of MRS

Ashley Moss:

Roof pros of that female focused, and let's take it across the country.

Ashley Moss:

We'd love to see.

Ashley Moss:

Dots, you know, all over the map as well.

Ashley Moss:

'cause having worked with that distribution company, we do know

Ashley Moss:

a lot of talented women and men in the industry that we know would

Ashley Moss:

do fantastic in other markets.

Ashley Moss:

So that's kind of the really big, long-term picture.

Ashley Moss:

But, um, that, that would also be something we would really

Ashley Moss:

enjoy doing and working on.

Todd Miller:

It makes every bit of sense once you've established those

Todd Miller:

relationships and got that trust going, um, to be able to bring other products and

Todd Miller:

other, uh, trades to those folks as well.

Todd Miller:

So I wanna talk a little bit about the in-home sales process.

Todd Miller:

Um, you use and, you know, you talk about slowing down that process and, uh, gotta

Todd Miller:

be honest, that's the exact opposite of what I see most contractors wanting to do.

Todd Miller:

They just wanna speed it up and push it through.

Todd Miller:

So, um, what.

Todd Miller:

Does slowing down the process mean to you, and how do your customers respond to that?

Ashley Moss:

The biggest thing about slowing down the process for us is

Ashley Moss:

really taking the time to listen.

Ashley Moss:

Um, I think that goes back to kind of what we were talking about, that volume

Ashley Moss:

that a lot of companies are trying to do.

Ashley Moss:

They wanna get in, they wanna get out, they wanna sell what they

Ashley Moss:

typically know, and we really try to.

Ashley Moss:

Pause before we even meet with our clients as we're getting ready

Ashley Moss:

to walk in and, and meet them and have a conversation with them.

Ashley Moss:

We really try to calm ourselves and slow ourselves down and really pay attention

Ashley Moss:

to what they're saying because oftentimes.

Ashley Moss:

What they think their issue is may not necessarily be what their issue

Ashley Moss:

is or what they think they want isn't necessarily what they need.

Ashley Moss:

And so we spend a lot of time having that conversation with them and, and

Ashley Moss:

allowing them to talk and allowing them to share what their concerns are.

Ashley Moss:

And this also gives us an opportunity to really get to know.

Ashley Moss:

What, what their long-term goals are with their home, or what

Ashley Moss:

their financial situation is, or what their family situation is.

Ashley Moss:

Um, you, you'd be surprised at how, how much people really wanna

Ashley Moss:

share or, you know, wanna be heard.

Ashley Moss:

And so that's our biggest thing, is really just taking the time to really understand

Ashley Moss:

what they're doing, what, what their, what their needs are, what their wants are.

Ashley Moss:

Just listening to, to what their concerns are.

Ashley Moss:

And that's been very well received.

Ashley Moss:

Um, I feel like lots of times our customers are just, they, they're happy.

Ashley Moss:

They're like, thank you for coming, and that was so much fun.

Ashley Moss:

I didn't know this could be fun.

Ashley Moss:

Because they're like, I feel really comfortable.

Ashley Moss:

I feel like we should have more conversations.

Ashley Moss:

And so it's really been well received.

Ashley Moss:

So we're, we're really happy about how that's turning out.

Ashley Moss:

So.

Todd Miller:

I love that.

Todd Miller:

And you talk about helping them to, you know, talk about their dreams

Todd Miller:

and their future and you know, that really can influence the choices

Todd Miller:

they make now, I mean, I see a lot of folks, for example, who invest

Todd Miller:

in better roofs, who tell me you.

Todd Miller:

You know, I'm gonna leave this house to my kids, or I've got a nephew I'm

Todd Miller:

gonna sell this to in a few years.

Todd Miller:

And so, you know, blessing them with a long-term roof can make a lot of sense.

Todd Miller:

Well, I, I'm kind of curious on your sales process.

Todd Miller:

How, how long are you typically in the home with a client?

Ashley Moss:

It can vary depending right on the situation, but.

Ashley Moss:

We, we spend a decent amount of time because our typical, kind of a typical,

Ashley Moss:

uh, meeting with a client would be, we get there, we kind of just talk

Ashley Moss:

about what their needs are, why did they call us, what are their concerns?

Ashley Moss:

And then Josh will get on the roof, he'll get in the attic, he'll

Ashley Moss:

crawl around, he'll take a look.

Ashley Moss:

And one of the biggest things that we've started utilizing, which we really

Ashley Moss:

feel like has been a big game changer.

Ashley Moss:

It has been the use of like the GoPro.

Ashley Moss:

So he'll get on the roof, he'll get up there, he'll take videos, he'll

Ashley Moss:

be able to show them where there's damage or where there's not damage,

Ashley Moss:

right, where something's going on.

Ashley Moss:

And so by him getting up there and taking a few quick videos, when he

Ashley Moss:

comes back down and we go back in there to talk to the, the customer.

Ashley Moss:

They can see firsthand what he's talking about.

Ashley Moss:

And that has been, like I said, just a really big game changer.

Ashley Moss:

The, the, when you look at that, that customer's face as you're showing

Ashley Moss:

'em, okay, here's some hail damage, you can see the divots, or here's

Ashley Moss:

some wind damage you see pulled back, you know, shingles or whatnot.

Ashley Moss:

The customer is finally going, oh, they, they get a better visual.

Ashley Moss:

They understand, and that also builds a lot of that trust.

Ashley Moss:

I think, you know, they, they, they can see it because otherwise you're taking

Ashley Moss:

your word for somebody, getting on a roof, going, yeah, there's some damage

Ashley Moss:

up there, there's some issues, but how do you know you're not getting on the roof?

Ashley Moss:

You don't know what to look for.

Ashley Moss:

And so by, by showing those videos and getting them to be able to

Ashley Moss:

see firsthand what's going on in their roof has been a huge.

Ashley Moss:

a huge.

Ashley Moss:

asset to us.

Ashley Moss:

So it gets them more involved too.

Ashley Moss:

They're looking at it.

Ashley Moss:

They're going, okay, now what do we need to do?

Ashley Moss:

And so that opens up those doors for us to give them options.

Ashley Moss:

Is it gonna be.

Ashley Moss:

Just a, a restoration of the roof or is it gonna be a full replacement?

Ashley Moss:

And then, like you just said, that allows us also to have those conversations of are

Ashley Moss:

you planning on staying here long term?

Ashley Moss:

You know, is this, are you getting ready to sell?

Ashley Moss:

Are you getting ready to downsize?

Ashley Moss:

Are you, are you wanting to remodel?

Ashley Moss:

And then if we can have those conversations when we're talking about

Ashley Moss:

what needs are needing to be met.

Ashley Moss:

That opens up their wants.

Ashley Moss:

And then we can also talk about, okay, look, if you're ready to remodel,

Ashley Moss:

let me show you all the cool new things that are out there for roofs.

Ashley Moss:

Let's put metal on this time.

Ashley Moss:

Let's talk about a different type of a shingle.

Ashley Moss:

Let's, let's do a bold color because you're wanting to change

Ashley Moss:

the app, the exterior home, so.

Ashley Moss:

Those have been the, the best way.

Ashley Moss:

So that's, I mean, it's not a set way that we do, we really try to, like I

Ashley Moss:

said, listen to our customers and then that just kind of guides where we go

Ashley Moss:

and, and how our sales process goes.

Todd Miller:

Well, I think that's great because over the years I've noticed some.

Todd Miller:

Tractors take a very technical approach.

Todd Miller:

Others take a little bit more of an ROI based approach.

Todd Miller:

And it sounds like you folks do a great job of blending those both together

Todd Miller:

and, uh, that certainly seems like it would serve your clients extremely well.

Todd Miller:

Um, well, let's talk a little bit about product selection.

Todd Miller:

You know, helping them choose the right product for them and their home.

Todd Miller:

Um, again.

Todd Miller:

This is kind of a fresh approach.

Todd Miller:

'cause so many contractors just push the product that they're most familiar with or

Todd Miller:

they have an installer with for, or maybe the one they, they're gonna get a trip

Todd Miller:

program if they sell enough squares of it.

Todd Miller:

I don't know.

Todd Miller:

Um, what are some of the tools that you use when working with homeowners

Todd Miller:

through that product selection process?

Ashley Moss:

I think the biggest tool that we've been utilizing is all the

Ashley Moss:

technology that's out there, right?

Ashley Moss:

All of the manufacturer's websites, the, the, the amazing tools that they're

Ashley Moss:

out there now where you can, you know, take a picture of your, of your home

Ashley Moss:

and we'll do that with their home.

Ashley Moss:

And we'll change colors of the roof so they can kind of see firsthand.

Ashley Moss:

So we really encourage our customers too.

Ashley Moss:

After we've had an assessment, after we've talked to 'em about options, then

Ashley Moss:

we really like to say, Hey, why don't you go check out these different websites.

Ashley Moss:

Go look at these different, uh, products that are now available.

Ashley Moss:

We'll bring in.

Ashley Moss:

Product samples if need be, like in our second in our, you

Ashley Moss:

know, appointment with 'em.

Ashley Moss:

And there's obviously every kind of pamphlet I have, every kind

Ashley Moss:

of, you know, flyer I've got.

Ashley Moss:

But what we really try to use is really push them to go look out

Ashley Moss:

on the internet and see what's out there because there's so many.

Ashley Moss:

Uh, visuals now.

Ashley Moss:

And that's so helpful when a and a, when a customer's trying to

Ashley Moss:

decide, because I mean, once you get that roof up there, you're not

Ashley Moss:

gonna be like, Hey, I don't like it.

Ashley Moss:

Now what do I do?

Ashley Moss:

I mean, we actually were talking to a, uh, our dentist the other

Ashley Moss:

day and he was making that comment.

Ashley Moss:

He was like, no.

Ashley Moss:

My wife was like, I really want this color.

Ashley Moss:

And he was like, I don't know.

Ashley Moss:

And then it's up there and now they're like.

Ashley Moss:

Really wish we could change it.

Ashley Moss:

So there's all these cool new technological advances that, that

Ashley Moss:

we really try to utilize to help ease that decision making as well.

Ashley Moss:

Right.

Ashley Moss:

So there's just a lot out there that they can go and look and,

Ashley Moss:

and that's definitely a benefit.

Ashley Moss:

So I.

Todd Miller:

You know, as I think about, you know, being a woman owned

Todd Miller:

business in a largely male industry, I'm, I'm kind of curious, and maybe

Todd Miller:

this is kind of a nuance, but.

Todd Miller:

Do you carry the fact that you are female owned, front and center in your marketing?

Todd Miller:

Or is it more that you promote the fact that your business is

Todd Miller:

different, uh, in these ways?

Todd Miller:

And of course those are because you know, you've got more of a

Todd Miller:

female perspective to things.

Todd Miller:

I realize that's kind of a nuance, but I'm kind of curious which one

Todd Miller:

kind of leads the way for you.

Ashley Moss:

Well, I think our name

Ashley Moss:

is a, is a big, you know, uh, push towards, it's the misses, right?

Ashley Moss:

It's the female, it's the pink, it's the logo, it's the diamonds.

Ashley Moss:

I mean, you know, it, it's, it's kind of in your face in that regard.

Ashley Moss:

Then clearly if you're on the website, you'll see my face.

Ashley Moss:

But, um, but it wasn't, it's not as much of the, of wanting to really

Ashley Moss:

push the female owned business as much as, as it is the female perspective.

Ashley Moss:

And that's what's differentiating us from other roofers.

Ashley Moss:

Right.

Ashley Moss:

It's adding.

Ashley Moss:

Style in adding that extra flare, giving our customers the chance to

Ashley Moss:

be able to make their home a little more unique and a little more them.

Ashley Moss:

And I think that's where I try to emphasize.

Ashley Moss:

The female side of it, if you will.

Ashley Moss:

It's not necessarily that way, but it is a different approach, a different way of

Ashley Moss:

thinking of things, um, and, and about how to go about putting on a roof, right?

Ashley Moss:

I wanna add style, I wanna add color, I wanna make, I want my

Ashley Moss:

house to stand out a little bit more than somebody else's or whatnot.

Ashley Moss:

But, so yeah, it is a very nuanced, like you said it, but.

Ashley Moss:

The, I think the logo and the name speaks a

Ashley Moss:

lot,

Todd Miller:

Sure.

Ashley Moss:

but other than that, no.

Ashley Moss:

I, I kind of wanna push with that.

Ashley Moss:

We're different because of how we approach it.

Todd Miller:

So you just maybe think of something.

Todd Miller:

Very rarely do I plug our own company on our podcast, but,

Todd Miller:

um, I, I do have to say this, so.

Todd Miller:

To the best of my knowledge, we are the only residential roofing manufacturer

Todd Miller:

that can do custom colors in job lots.

Todd Miller:

And a lot of times, you know, we have customers who end up with us

Todd Miller:

because they're like, I just want this specific color, and we can

Todd Miller:

bring them through a color matching process and do some cool stuff.

Todd Miller:

Well, I, I'm kind of curious, you know, you've been at this, you

Todd Miller:

know, for a while now, starting your own business with MRS Roof Pros.

Todd Miller:

Any challenges along the way that surprised you?

Ashley Moss:

Um, I would think the, the biggest challenge has been the technology.

Todd Miller:

Oh, really?

Todd Miller:

Okay.

Ashley Moss:

Um, yes.

Ashley Moss:

Um, just, I mean, I've been floored at how hard it's been to be Google verified and.

Ashley Moss:

It's all those little teeny things, the marketing, the social

Ashley Moss:

media, the, the technology, because it's changing so rapidly.

Ashley Moss:

That, I mean, we've definitely had to hire younger people to

Ashley Moss:

help us with our social media.

Ashley Moss:

Um, our own children were laughing at us at the very beginning and they're

Ashley Moss:

like, wow, that's not good mom.

Ashley Moss:

And so, so bringing in.

Ashley Moss:

Those that understand that better has been a lifesaver.

Ashley Moss:

And you'll hopefully start to see that even more and more now.

Ashley Moss:

Um, but yeah, that technology on that side, right, you know, it's,

Ashley Moss:

it's learning a new CRM and utilizing that because we really wanna be tech

Ashley Moss:

focused because that is the future.

Ashley Moss:

And that's another way for us to differentiate ourselves, I think

Ashley Moss:

from a lot of roofing contractors, there's so many that are still too

Ashley Moss:

afraid to get into that, and we want.

Ashley Moss:

We want our clients to be able to, from their phone, pay that invoice, right.

Ashley Moss:

Choose some things, make appointments.

Ashley Moss:

Um, and so we're having to learn all that and make sure we understand that.

Ashley Moss:

And, and it's constantly changing.

Ashley Moss:

I mean, AI and everything else, uh, it's, it's, woo, it's been a lot.

Todd Miller:

Well, and I love that, you know, the, the kids

Todd Miller:

saying, I'm just saying, mom, we gotta do it this other way.

Todd Miller:

And, you know, having, having that, uh, younger perspective to help you.

Todd Miller:

Well, any real pleasant surprises you've had along the way.

Ashley Moss:

I would say our, our best surprise, and I don't know why this is

Ashley Moss:

so shocking to me, but the unbelievable amount of support that we have gotten

Ashley Moss:

from everyone, from our previous, like coworkers and colleagues, even our,

Ashley Moss:

what you would consider our competition, um, everyone has been so positive.

Ashley Moss:

And so supportive, and they're like, you guys are gonna kill it out there.

Ashley Moss:

We're so excited.

Ashley Moss:

I love what you're doing.

Ashley Moss:

I've never thought about doing it that way.

Ashley Moss:

I love all this, this whole approach.

Ashley Moss:

And so that has been just absolutely wonderful.

Ashley Moss:

Just the, the sheer support from everybody has been, we're just, we're so grateful

Ashley Moss:

and we're just been so humbled by it.

Ashley Moss:

So it's been wonderful.

Todd Miller:

Well, you guys are doing the American Dream by going out there on

Todd Miller:

your own and doing this, so kudos to you.

Todd Miller:

Um, I'm kind of curious.

Todd Miller:

Is there any place or anyone you follow or listen to or read, um, that where

Todd Miller:

you find inspiration for your ideas?

Todd Miller:

Anyone in particular or just kind of a broad range or?

Ashley Moss:

I think a lot of it has been like listening to podcasts such as

Ashley Moss:

yours, listening to other friends of mine who do podcasts in, in, in the building

Ashley Moss:

industry, listening to our customers.

Ashley Moss:

Talking to our family and friends, you know, we'll throw all sorts of random

Ashley Moss:

ideas at 'em and like, what do you guys think about if we did something like this?

Ashley Moss:

Or, and, and they've got insight by being a homeowner or

Ashley Moss:

experiences they've gone through.

Ashley Moss:

That's been really great.

Ashley Moss:

'cause we have, we've gotten a lot of, of just different

Ashley Moss:

ideas from them, um, previous.

Ashley Moss:

Especially when I was doing organizational development and doing all that

Ashley Moss:

leadership, I always, I love John Maxwell.

Ashley Moss:

I mean any of his leadership books.

Ashley Moss:

Leadership 1 0 1 is such a great overall simple kind of when you're just kind

Ashley Moss:

of starting out a love that book.

Ashley Moss:

Uh, one of my other favorites was Rory Vaden.

Ashley Moss:

Take the Stairs.

Ashley Moss:

It's like an older book, but, and I don't know if you're,

Ashley Moss:

uh, familiar with him at all.

Ashley Moss:

It is such a great positive.

Ashley Moss:

Basically, get off your bum, you know, get out there, get

Ashley Moss:

going and just, and just, and.

Ashley Moss:

Plow ahead at it, right?

Ashley Moss:

Like, don't make excuses, just go and do something instead of just sitting.

Ashley Moss:

Make a change.

Ashley Moss:

And so his whole thing is like, take the stairs, right?

Ashley Moss:

Instead of taking the elevator, take the stairs.

Ashley Moss:

It's more of a challenge, but there's gonna be benefits from it.

Ashley Moss:

And one of my favorite stories that he's.

Ashley Moss:

That he talks about in there and it's, it's, it's stuck with

Ashley Moss:

me for, for all these years.

Ashley Moss:

And I don't know if you guys have ever heard of the cow and

Ashley Moss:

the Buffalo story, where, how.

Ashley Moss:

In the Colorado plains, there's cows and there's buffaloes.

Ashley Moss:

And when storms would come in, they come over from the west right

Ashley Moss:

out over the rocky mountains, and then they go towards the east.

Ashley Moss:

The cows and the buffaloes would both go, okay, I can sense there's a storm coming.

Ashley Moss:

So the cows just go, I gotta get outta here, right?

Ashley Moss:

So they start running towards the east, away from the storm.

Ashley Moss:

So the problem is cows aren't very fast, right?

Ashley Moss:

they've run out of energy pretty quick.

Ashley Moss:

And so the storm eventually catches up with the cows and the cows are tired, and

Ashley Moss:

then they're stuck in the storm longer having to be, you know, suffer from it.

Ashley Moss:

Where a buffalo turns towards the storm, he goes to the west, and the

Ashley Moss:

buffaloes just run through the storm.

Ashley Moss:

And they just, you know, put their head down and they go and, and then you,

Ashley Moss:

you get through the storm a lot faster, you're on the other side and then you

Ashley Moss:

get to enjoy the benefits from the storm, the rain, the growth, the whatever.

Ashley Moss:

And, and that's just always struck me because so many times we want

Ashley Moss:

to just go, this is too hard.

Ashley Moss:

I don't wanna do this.

Ashley Moss:

And I'm not gonna lie, there's been a few days, you know, recently

Ashley Moss:

when we've started this business that we're like, what are we doing?

Ashley Moss:

Um, but.

Ashley Moss:

That's just stuck with me and I, and I really feel strongly that

Ashley Moss:

if we just all kind of just face those storms, just get through it.

Ashley Moss:

It's so much better.

Ashley Moss:

On the other side, the procrastination is what just holds

Ashley Moss:

so many of us stuck, you know?

Ashley Moss:

So that, those are like two of my favorites that I'll still, every now and

Ashley Moss:

then pick up and just kind of read to give me a little boost, a little extra.

Ashley Moss:

You can do this.

Ashley Moss:

Don't go take that nap right now for whatever it might be, but.

Todd Miller:

I love that story.

Todd Miller:

Uh, Ryan, we gotta call this the cows in the Buffalo episode.

Todd Miller:

I think.

Todd Miller:

I mean, that is a great story and I have no idea if it's true.

Todd Miller:

I haven't lived with cows or buffalo, but, but, but what a great story.

Todd Miller:

Well, I, I'm curious, do you have any advice for someone out there who might be

Todd Miller:

new to construction or home improvement, what advice do you have for them?

Ashley Moss:

Network.

Ashley Moss:

I really am a big proponent of networking and, and meaning as simple as just getting

Ashley Moss:

out there and talking to people, right?

Ashley Moss:

Um, finding friends or family members who are in the

Ashley Moss:

industry, talking to them about.

Ashley Moss:

What is it like?

Ashley Moss:

What do you do?

Ashley Moss:

You know, what should I, what should I go and study or should I find out

Ashley Moss:

more about just networking and then utilizing any of those groups that

Ashley Moss:

are in that particular industry?

Ashley Moss:

Um, uh, clearly one for us for is, is National Women in Roofing.

Ashley Moss:

It's a great.

Ashley Moss:

It's a great, uh, group of women and it's a way for you to be immediately

Ashley Moss:

connected with other people who are going through the same boat as

Ashley Moss:

you or understand that industry.

Ashley Moss:

Um, finding a mentor.

Ashley Moss:

Uh, I was blessed to have a fantastic mentor when I was at that, uh,

Ashley Moss:

distribution company, and she has, she's turned into one of my best friends.

Ashley Moss:

But just having that mentor you can go throw ideas off of and ask questions

Ashley Moss:

about, how do I do this in this field?

Ashley Moss:

And what have you experienced?

Ashley Moss:

And, and she's so good at.

Ashley Moss:

She'll, she'll give it to me back straight.

Ashley Moss:

She'll be like, Nope, don't do this, do that.

Ashley Moss:

You're doing it wrong, whatever.

Ashley Moss:

But just mentoring and, and finding out other people that you can go glean from

Ashley Moss:

their expertise and their experiences is probably my biggest suggestion.

Todd Miller:

Oh, that's great advice.

Todd Miller:

Um.

Todd Miller:

Hey, it's been great having you here on the show today.

Todd Miller:

Is there anything we haven't covered that you wanted to be sure to, to share with

Todd Miller:

our construction disruption audience?

Ashley Moss:

Um, no, I mean, other than.

Ashley Moss:

I, it's like we were talking about, I'm, I'm excited to be doing this.

Ashley Moss:

This is a scary new kind of, of, of, of thing.

Ashley Moss:

We're gonna go out here and try.

Ashley Moss:

But I just really encourage other women, other men, other individuals,

Ashley Moss:

like you said, I mean, America's the greatest place to live and

Ashley Moss:

we have so much opportunity here.

Ashley Moss:

Just get out there and try something you just don't know and, and just jump

Ashley Moss:

into it and you'd be surprised at how many people are willing to be supportive

Ashley Moss:

and helpful and help you along that.

Ashley Moss:

Um, I mean, we're excited to be here.

Ashley Moss:

We're excited to see where we can take, you know, MRS Roof pros and, and just

Ashley Moss:

thank you both again for having me on.

Ashley Moss:

This has been a fantastic experience.

Todd Miller:

Well, thank you and I'm excited to see what you're doing and

Todd Miller:

watch the coming years unfold as well.

Todd Miller:

Uh, I think you're doing a, i a great job and I love what

Todd Miller:

you're, the fresh perspective you're bringing to an old trade.

Todd Miller:

Uh, I think is great.

Todd Miller:

Well, this has been a great time.

Todd Miller:

Um, before we close out, I have to ask if you're willing to participate

Todd Miller:

in something we call Rapid fire.

Todd Miller:

Um, so these are five questions, some serious, some a little more silly.

Todd Miller:

All you have to do is give a quick response or you up to

Todd Miller:

the challenge of rapid fire.

Ashley Moss:

Absolutely.

Todd Miller:

Awesome.

Todd Miller:

Well, Ryan, would you like to have the pleasure of making the

Todd Miller:

first, asking the first question?

Ryan Bell:

I would love to Thank you, Todd.

Ryan Bell:

Question number one, what is a product or service you've acquired recently

Ryan Bell:

that was a real game changer for you?

Ashley Moss:

I don't know if it's necessarily as as recent, as much

Ashley Moss:

as I had no idea that with Amazon, if you already have an order out.

Ashley Moss:

They've started a new little button that if you look at something else you

Ashley Moss:

might want, it can just add it right to that same order and you, if you push

Ashley Moss:

it, 'cause I accidentally pushed it the other day, it'll just charge you.

Ashley Moss:

It goes right on there.

Ashley Moss:

I had no idea it was a game changer for me and, and then I also realized that I can.

Ashley Moss:

I can order paper towels, I can order all sorts of things that I

Ashley Moss:

don't have to go to the store for.

Ashley Moss:

That has been a game changer, which is kind of sad to say, but

Ashley Moss:

it really has been wonderful.

Ashley Moss:

So

Ryan Bell:

So you don't have to add it to your cart and checkout.

Ryan Bell:

It's just like a one click checkout.

Ashley Moss:

Yes.

Ashley Moss:

And it'll, it'll automatically stick it on whatever's coming tomorrow.

Ashley Moss:

And I'm like, oh my

Ashley Moss:

gosh, this is so bad.

Ashley Moss:

'cause now I'm like, oops.

Todd Miller:

So, so convenient though.

Todd Miller:

Uh, so convenient.

Todd Miller:

Okay.

Todd Miller:

Question number two.

Todd Miller:

What is a vehicle that you once owned or maybe you drove?

Todd Miller:

O, maybe it was even a parent's vehicle that you wish you still had.

Ashley Moss:

that's a good question, huh.

Ashley Moss:

Um,

Ashley Moss:

I did have, well, it was my parents, but a Mitsubishi 3000 gt.

Ashley Moss:

It was like one of those old kind of sportsy car and it was just fun 'cause

Ashley Moss:

it was little and it was two seater basically, and it was a lot of fun.

Ashley Moss:

Oh my gosh, that is such a fun question and I haven't thought about that.

Ashley Moss:

Yeah, I haven't thought about that car in a long time.

Ashley Moss:

That was a great car.

Todd Miller:

May, maybe another one of those can be in your future.

Todd Miller:

Who knows?

Ashley Moss:

that's right.

Ashley Moss:

I don't know where you'd find one of those now, but.

Ryan Bell:

All right.

Ryan Bell:

Uh, question number three.

Ryan Bell:

What is your favorite meal?

Ashley Moss:

Ooh.

Ashley Moss:

I love lots of meals, but pretty much anything that has chips and

Ashley Moss:

salsa in it, I'll be a happy person.

Ashley Moss:

I will eat chips and salsa as a meal on at least once a week, if not more.

Ashley Moss:

So anything with chips and salsa, I'd love.

Ashley Moss:

So.

Todd Miller:

Well, that's hard to work that in with your, uh, your

Todd Miller:

favorite pumper nickel bread that you like so much, isn't it Ryan?

Ryan Bell:

Was hoping I'd be able to talk about it a little bit.

Ryan Bell:

Yeah.

Ryan Bell:

But yes, I love for it.

Ryan Bell:

Anybody that doesn't, doesn't know.

Ryan Bell:

I love

Ryan Bell:

pumpernickel

Todd Miller:

Thumper nickel and and salsa.

Todd Miller:

Question four.

Todd Miller:

Um, what would, okay, would you rather always have to sing everything you have

Todd Miller:

to say or would you prefer to have to dance every place you have to walk?

Ashley Moss:

Ooh, definitely the dancing.

Todd Miller:

Really interesting.

Ashley Moss:

I'm not good at either, but I really do.

Ashley Moss:

I love dancing, so I would have so, so much fun dance.

Ashley Moss:

I mean, my husband and I do a lot of dancing in the house anyways, and

Ashley Moss:

we will do it in the grocery stores.

Ashley Moss:

'cause I don't know if you guys have been at a grocery store lately, but

Ashley Moss:

they're playing all of our eighties stuff and I, we will end up dancing

Ashley Moss:

in the aisles and we're like, and then I'm like, oh, where am I?

Ashley Moss:

Okay.

Ashley Moss:

So yeah.

Ashley Moss:

But I think I would totally love to do the dancing.

Todd Miller:

Cool.

Todd Miller:

Good answer.

Ryan Bell:

All right.

Ryan Bell:

Final question here.

Ryan Bell:

We'll end on a little bit more of a serious note.

Ryan Bell:

What would you like to be remembered for at the end of your days?

Ashley Moss:

I would wanna be remembered for being someone who

Ashley Moss:

is just kind, compassionate, uh, giving 'cause Josh and I really do

Ashley Moss:

focus a lot on, we wanna give back.

Ashley Moss:

We're very, our faith is a very big part of who we are and we

Ashley Moss:

love to, to help others and.

Ashley Moss:

Being in this industry has also opened up those doors for us, which

Ashley Moss:

is wonderful, but just charity and kindness and giving back to others.

Ashley Moss:

I, I, that would, that would, that would be awesome to be remembered for that.

Todd Miller:

I, I love that answer.

Todd Miller:

And how often, I've been thinking lately what a different.

Todd Miller:

World it would be if we were all just giving and sharing, uh, the way that,

Todd Miller:

that we're supposed to be doing.

Todd Miller:

Um, and how, how different that would be.

Todd Miller:

So cool stuff.

Todd Miller:

Well, actually, I have no doubt, um, that what you're going to do, what you're

Todd Miller:

doing is gonna be successful and it's gonna successful continue to follow you.

Todd Miller:

Um, if folks would like to connect with you, what are the

Todd Miller:

best ways for them to do that?

Ashley Moss:

Um, on our website, we've got Facebook, Instagram, just look

Ashley Moss:

for MRS Roof Pros and you'll find us.

Ashley Moss:

We're out there, obviously more so now than ever with our new young help.

Todd Miller:

Well, and I know you're pretty easy to find on LinkedIn also.

Todd Miller:

And and so is Josh.

Todd Miller:

I believe so.

Ashley Moss:

Yes.

Ashley Moss:

Oh yeah.

Todd Miller:

Good.

Todd Miller:

Well, did we all get in our challenge words?

Todd Miller:

I know I worked mine in, um, what was mine?

Todd Miller:

Oh, mine was just saying.

Todd Miller:

Just saying.

Todd Miller:

Yeah.

Ashley Moss:

I'm pretty sure I got mine in

Ashley Moss:

all then.

Todd Miller:

all right then.

Todd Miller:

All Ryan, I'm sorry.

Todd Miller:

I probably spoiled yours for you, didn't

Ryan Bell:

So I was planning on throwing it in.

Ryan Bell:

I'm, I was thinking, no matter what she says, I can say that sounds good

Ryan Bell:

with a side of pumpernickel bread.

Ryan Bell:

was totally caught off guard by the chips and salsa answer, and I was

Ryan Bell:

just kinda like, I'm not, I'm just not gonna get my word in this episode.

Ryan Bell:

So.

Ashley Moss:

I

Ashley Moss:

apologize, Ryan.

Ryan Bell:

okay.

Todd Miller:

you, you get a half point because we still got it in there somehow

Todd Miller:

with, with a little help from our friends.

Todd Miller:

Right.

Ryan Bell:

Yep.

Todd Miller:

Well actually, thank you so much.

Todd Miller:

This has been a great time.

Todd Miller:

We really appreciate your time here today.

Ashley Moss:

Thank you.

Ashley Moss:

It has been so much fun.

Ashley Moss:

I really enjoyed it.

Todd Miller:

Thank you to our audience for tuning into this very special

Todd Miller:

episode of Construction Disruption with our friend Ashley Moss of MRS Roof.

Todd Miller:

Pros, please watch for future episodes.

Todd Miller:

Um, we always have great guests.

Todd Miller:

Give us a thumbs up or a good review, whatever the case may be.

Todd Miller:

Um, but until the next time we're together, keep on challenging, keep on

Todd Miller:

looking for better ways of doing things.

Todd Miller:

And above all, don't forget to have a positive impact on everyone you encounter.

Todd Miller:

Um, make them smile, give them some words of encouragement.

Todd Miller:

Such simple yet powerful things you can do to change someone else's world.

Todd Miller:

So God bless and take care.

Todd Miller:

This is Isaiah Industry signing off until the next episode

Todd Miller:

of Construction Disruption.
